Yes, Microsoft Firewall does block applications but it doesn't block incoming attacks or intrusions so be careful.
Free firewall software? I liked the Comodo Personal firewall, a bit tricky to get to know at first because you need to use the mouse pointer a fair bet but after all! that's what its for, to be used to read the screen and click on items etc <smile>.
