I have seen this over and over again. Many times, when there is a call for help on this list, I even do have a certain feeling, that this might be the underlaying problem.
For instance, if your firewall pops up with a message window on the screen - and many of them comes without any notifying sound - it often only will stay there for a few seconds. That is, WE will only see it for that short periode of time. If then, you are not at the computer at this particular time, the Window will somehow loose focus, and WE will not see it any longer. When you return to your PC, the 'lost window' will still be there, and cause problems. Personally, I see that such 'lost' windows from my firwall, as well as from SuperAntiSpyware, causes problems, like the Read/Unread graphics in Outlook Express, no longer being spoken. If you somehow can get to the window that lost its focus, and manage to close it, woopsy, your WE will start behaving normal again. Even in a Notepad window, you can get things troublesome, if there is such a 'lost' or 'hidden' message window open - anywhere on your screen. You might think that it is just to Alt-Tab through the list of open windows. Oh no, sorry. These windows get hidden, and won't be in the Alt-Tab list. And might not either show up in the system tray. Turning off WE, and opening another screen reader of some kind, i.e NVDA, might sometimes help, and you will be able to see the window, and get it closed. What I wonder, is why WE has no feature built-in, that would discover these windows, and let you get to them. There really should be ways to 'unhide' or 'regain focus' on such windows. Or, if GW don't want WE to bother with this kind of windows, first they have lost focus, then don't let WE bother about misbehaving, just because such a window is till open on the screen. As it is, many times, the only way to rid the problem, is to restart your PC. But that will only solve the problem temporarily, till next time your Firewall, or any other software throws a message (like an update message) at you, while you are eating lunch. Coming back, your screen is holding the message box, focus is lost, and WE starts to misbehave, not reading all the text in your focused window, skipping graphics in things like Outlook Express, Ding on you, when you try to backspace in Notepad; or similar 'funny' stuff. GW Staff, could we have a comment on why WE does bother enough with lost windows, that it gets messed up; but not enough bothering so as to let the user have a chance to get to the window in question? I really find it strange, if I would happen to be the only one seeing this problem; so really think GW at least, might know what I am talking about. -- I am using the free version of SPAMfighter.
