To add to this, a window will open if an application doesn't stop in
time asking you if you want to force the shutdown or not. Press Alt-F
for "force shutdown," and "Y" for yes to the next dialog that opens.
Note that this is in Windows 7; I haven't used Vista in a couple of
years so don't know if the force shutdown option is available.

Steve

Hi Peggy,
I have vista, which is essentially the same as windows 7, and it's
every bit as sensitive as you have found. <frown>
I have found no way around the varying menus and dialogs which may
appear as a result of an improper shutdown, and there's nothing GW can
do about the situation. as a group, all of the blind should be
writing Microsoft about this, as they could do something if they chose
to put some effort into it!
Until then, I have learned some keystrokes which help me shutdown and
restart vista, in case window eyes is not speaking. perhaps someone
has a better set and would share theirs, but here are mine:
* windows D or windows M and you're on the desktop
* alt-F4 and you get the shutdown menu asking what you want to do.
* press R and the "restart" radio button is selected
* press enter, and it will begin to restart
the only problem with these is that if you had unsaved work when
window eyes stopped talking, that application may halt the restart
asking you if you want to save it. I don't know of a way around that
for certain. if you don't hear the shutdown sound soon, you could
press alt-N assuming you're app is asking you a yes/no question.

*Subject:* Windows 7 sensitive to shutdowns?
Hi, all. I really love my Windows 7 machine, but it seems to be more
sensitive to
forced shutdowns, and to shutdowns in general, than any of my XP
machines ever were.
This isn't an everyday thing, thank God, but there have been a few
times when booting
up, that I was told Windows had an unexpected shutdown and couldn't
start, and did
I want it to look for a previous restore point for starting. Today,
my husband had
logged me off and gone into his profile, then he went back to the
logon screen and
I logged back onto my profile. Window-Eyes said a couple words, then
went silent.
I can't remember now if I held in the power button to force a
shutdown, or if I brought
up the start menu, arrowed once and hit enter to shut down. The
computer shut down,
and when I turned it back on, I could hear the disk start to move and
get to a certain
point, then it would restart. It kept doing this over and over.
Finally my husband
came in and said there was a dialog about an improper shut down,
whether because
of a problem or some other reason, and to click here if I wanted to
start in safe
mode or here if I wanted to start normally. Of course, not having
speech, I didn't
know why it was restarting or what to do about it. I had tried to hit
enter at one
point when it seemed to have stopped moving, and that made things move
again. My
husband said "start normally" was highlighted, so perhaps I just
needed to hit enter
again?
I'm just wondering if anyone else who has Windows 7 has noticed how
sensitive it
is to shutdowns, and if you've found a way as a blind person to get it
up and talking
again if there isn't a sighted person readily available.
Peggy
