Brenda, just an FYI, the current MS Word script does announce formatting info for paragraphs, as it changes when you move through the document, if you have format alert turned on in WE. this isn't exactly what you're asking for, but it's close: it would automatically tell you that a paragraph is right justified for instance, as you arrowed to it. so, the current script may help you quite a bit, until I can do something about the key dictionary.
just like you, I don't like typing and having key echo turned on, so I'm not familiar with this function you're missing, as I've never used it. Thanks Tom for pointing out the technical basis of the issue; otherwise, I'd have spent a lot of time thinking WE was automatically doing more than it is really the case.
