You should really google that topic; it's quite a lengthy answer. the short version is that a torrent is a way of specifying a large file to be downloaded. the specification goes to a server, and the server connects you with many people who have this file, each of whom sends you small bits of it, all at the same time.
because you have so many servers responding to your request for the file, you can download a large file very quickly.
