I too have these occasionally. I think it's most often caused by html messages, so, you can convert the html to text with control-shift-o when in the message, or, you can make outlook always to the conversion automatically for you (which is what I recommend). can't see any reason why you need to have a message be in html format, so set outlook to convert all email to standard text.
