Do you have the Thunderbird installed and the preview pane turned off?
You probably know this, but function key 8 toggles it.

If anyone has tips on making W-E talk with tB 3.1, please send to the list as I have this problem as well. Whenever I encounter a link, W-E goes silent. I can use the numpad mouse keys, but it would be nice to have the arrow keys working again. Using W-E 7.2 and XP .
