My own tweaks translated into the key describer mode.

Let's see if I can remember this correctly.

Traditional laptop layout mode, top left is alt-home.

Well this messes up the windows key to bring you to your homepage, so my tweak is control-alt-home.

When I put key describer mode on, it reads my changes. I hit control-alt-home, and key describer says top left.

I changed all those home, page up and down, and end keys to include control-alt.

I don't get it. What transferred in to the key describer mode? Do you mean
the WE lay out set up, or the embedded numpad set up?

Paulette,

No problem, I like this sort of thing, so any help you need let me know.

On my own laptop, I use the laptop layout and quite like it. When I decided
to learn it, I didn't know about the imbedded numpad thing.

Ya know what blew me away, after I made my tweaks to the laptop layout, they
translated into the key describer mode. I thought that was so cool!

Hi Tracy,

Thanks for the info. I'll play around with it for a while. I really
appreciate you sticking with me. When I had a laptop, when I used jaws,
and
that was a long time ago, I learned the embedded numpad and the function
key
lay out. After I learned it, using the computer wasn't much trouble. But,

I
forgot it all now. It was about 14 years ago. If using the WE laptop lay
out is so much trouble, I wonder why they even make it available?

Hi Paulette,

Ok, I just played around on our Asus.

Ya know what? I'd almost recommend you don't use the laptop layout and
learn the desktop layout with the function key.

This is a little complicated, but I think one could get use to it pretty
fast.

The function key just to the right of control, if you hold that down, part
of the keyboard becomes your numpad. If I understand this correctly,
picture jkl being 123, UIO being 456 and so on.

The great thing about this idea, is if someone tells you a shortcut key,
it'll be the same across the board because you are using the desktop
layout.

If you hit insert-1, this will bring you into key describer mode. This is wonderful, because you can practice learning the mouse functions with your
function numpad.

For example, function-j is bottom left, function-l is bottom right.

Let me know if this is helpful. It makes more sense once you practice
with
the insert-1 key describer mode.

Otherwise, I'll tell you the things I'd tweak in the laptop layout.

Take care,
Traci

Hmmm, aren't the home and end keys odd on the netbook?

Tell ya what, we have one of those here as well. I'll play around with
it
and let you know. *smile*

Hi Tracy,

Thanks for the information. I have an Asus netbook computer. Do you know
what, if any, tweeks, would be good to have on that computer?

Ok, you got to the part of getting to the manual? So once you get to
appendix a, enter on the laptop layout, then f6 to get you to the right
side
of the screen. This is where all the info is.

If you want to get back to the list, hit f6 again. *smile*

Hope this helps,
Traci

Hi Tracy,

I went to Window Eyes and hit Alt-H. It brought up a long alphabetical
list
of things, including laptop layout. When I tried to enter on the name,
nothing happened. Please help.

If you hit control-backslash to bring up win-eyes, alt-H to go to the
manual, laptop layout is under appendix A. A.3, I think for the
layouts.

I've been using the laptop layout for years. It took some getting use
to,
and I made a few tweaks, but I quite like it now. No need for that
extra
numpad. *smile*

In the directory with the manual is a file called laptop.txt. It
details
every defined laptop hotkey. Some of the commands take a bit of
getting
used to, though.
