Carol,

you asked for help in solving "this" issue, but you really have at least
three different issues you mentioned.

I'll start with the first one: how do you select multiple files reliably in
a list of files.

you're right, there is a way to start with one file, and then have it select
all the files until you indicate another file which is the end of the group;
however, I've never found this way of marking the start and end of a list to
be very reliable; just like you have found.

so, I use another technique: the other technique is to mark each file to be
included in the group, one at a time. it's a little slower, but it does
have the advantage in that you can select files, without requiring them all
to be in a group together.

to do this you get positioned on the first file; it's going to automatically
be included in the group when you start selecting a group, so you don't have
to do anything to the first one.

to start selecting your group you hold down the control key, and use your up
or down arrow with the control key down, until you come to the next file to
be included. when you get there, you let up on the control key, and you hit
the space bar to mark the file to be included. to go on, you press down on
the control key, and again arrow to the next file to be included.

you keep repeating until you have selected all the files. then, you do
something with this group before you move your focus anywhere. for
instance, now would be when you would press control C to copy this group of
files.

as for your next issue, I don't know why you aren't starting at the top of
the list. as you say, it's no problem to hit control-home to go to the top
though.

And your last issue: the focus suddenly moves from the files where you were.
the only explanation I can think of for this would be if you are
accidentally bumping the mouse, or, you have a laptop, and you are
accidentally touching the touchpad.

if you think this could be it, you can disable the mouse or the touchpad, so
you can guarantee only the keyboard is influencing things, and try it like
that. This is something you would do through device manager, or sometimes
through special software for the touchpad, but it's not something you can do
through window eyes.

hth,

Chip

Subject: losing focus in lists

I have a problem that seems to have gotten worse since the 7.2 refresh.
If I am in a list of files in any folder, and I want to select several, or
many, I can't keep them highlighted. For example, I am on file 10 and arrow
down to file 20. OK, this should be 11 files. I check the status line with
the mouse cursor to make sure they are all there.
Somethimes, there are 11, sometimes, there are 3 or 4, and sometimes, there
is only one, the one where the cursor ended up.

I use all screen maximized. I am running Windows 7 64-bit with Home
Premium, on a new (since January) Dell desktop. Also, If I open a new
folder, it is fairly likely that the cursor will land on some other file,
such as 10 or 14, instead of the top of the list. My view setting is for
details. This is not a big problem as I just go to the top of the list.
If, however, I want a particular file, and find it and press enter on it,
sometimes, before I press enter, focus has already moved and I open some
file several places further down on the list, which IS frustrating.

Thank you to anyone that can help me solve this issue.

Carol
