definately sounds like there is something that plays around with your focus. My first guess, would be that something is moving your mouse pointer, without your control. Actually, I did have a similar problem a while back. It showed up to be some kind of trojan that had sneaked in on my system. After running a clean up of the registry, along with scanning with both SuperAntiSpyware, and my AntiVirus program, things got far better. Even though you might have that kind of security software set to actively protect your system 'real-time', it doesn't ALWAYS catch things that lands on yor system. That's why, it is always a good thing, to run a thorough cleaning of your system, regularly. Even seen things like this happening when there is a given kind of cookies on the system. If you do not have any cookie on your system, that you REALLY, REALLY need, I would suggest you go ahead, and delete all cookies on your system. If you are not sure, whether you need anything from the Cookies directory, you could always make a backup of the Cookies folder, before deleting it. Simply just save the whole folder in another folder named something like Backup Cookies. Then, if you loose functionality on any website, you could restore the cookies from your backup. Although, I doubt it. My experience by far, is that just about any cookie, that your system ever stores, is only temporary, and if you ask me, rather should have been named TRASH, but cookies. Personally, I even have made a .bat file, placed it on my Desktop, and running it every so often, that simply deletes ALL cookies on my system. Never really had any trouble in browsing the net, due to the lack of these trash-files. OK, I don't say this is what causes your trouble, but from your description, it sounds to me, as if something is controlling yor mouse, and playing tricks on you. And, even if that is not the case, a good cleanup of your computer, might not hurt? (smile!)

Subject: losing focus partially resolved

Thanks to Chip, I have found at least a partial fix. It appears my wireless mouse was causing part of the problem. I can select files correctly again, but I am still not landing where I expect I should be all of the time. For example, I am on the desktop. I press enter for my Thunderbird shortcut. That opens TB as expected. When I go back to the desktop, normally, my cursor would still be on TB, but now, it is somewhere over to the right about 3 or 4 columns. This should not be a big deal, but when I come back to the same place, I expect the cursor to be where I left it, as it used to. Well, maybe I should change my keyboard batteries also.
