Neville,
Good stuff,
but no need to go to the run option.
for when you do your first command,
(1. Highlight the file and press control c to add the file to the
clipboard.)
You would just hold down the window key, and press the letter d and it
should put you on the desktop, and then paste with ctrl v.
That will put any file on the desktop.
Thanks,
Raj

Don't understand the difficulty being express with this task. Following
is a copy of a message I sent off list to Martha on how to achieve her
goal under WXP.
Neville.
copy of message:
Hi Martha,
Don't know why you would want to place the file on your desktop but here
are a couple
of suggestions on how to achieve your goal.
You could leave the file where it is and just place a link on the Desktop
by doing
the following.
Highlight the file and press the applications key, arrow down to send to
and press
enter. There you will find a command to place a shortcut on the Desktop.
But, if you really want to place the file on your Desktop then do the
following.
I can only give instructions for WXP but it should not be too different
for other
versions.
1. Highlight the file and press control c to add the file to the
clipboard.
2. Press the Windows key plus r to open the run dialogue. Type 2 periods
and press
enter to open the list of accounts on your system. Arrow to the one you
require and
press enter.
Arrow down to the Desktop folder and press enter.
Press control v to paste the contents of the clipboard into the Desktop
folder.
Press alt F4 enough times to regain the Desktop and your file should be
now listed.

Tom,
the problem I believe, is that she wants it on her desktop. I don't know
of
an easy way to get a file there. normally, you're told to right click an
empty space on the desktop and then choose paste.
what I do is use the %userprofile% variable to then drill down to my
desktop
dir, depending on the operating system. though, this can be different,
and
it's not that easy for everyone to manage.
I've seen powertoys with a "send to desktop" choice, but the one I tried
just had no effect.
anyone have any good ideas for getting a file to the desktop?
Chip

Hi Martha,
Have you tried just opening the file in excel and using the "save as"
option
and saving it to wherever you want the copy? Hope this does the trick.
Regards,
Tom

I have a file in Microsoft Excel and I want to move it to a folder on my
desktop. I have used every way of copying I can think of, and it doesn't
do
anything but sit there. If it copies any place I can't confirm it.
I go through this every two weeks when it comes to making a new time
sheet
for my Supervisor. I'm about ready to pull my hair out, and there isn't
much of that!
Many thanks in advance.
