you didn't say which synthesizer you were using, but I'd certainly suggest
trying a different synthesizer just to see if it's related to a specific
driver.

If not, next, I'd try disabling your various anti-malware utilities one at a
time.  this is especially true if you're running two or more together (such
as macafee and microsoft security essentials).  they can constantly
interrupt the functioning of other programs to check for various odd
conditions which may signal a virus, and they can do so much of this you'll
get choppy synthesizer speech.  if you find this is the case, I'd recommend
cutting back to having only one of them running in realtime mode, or,
getting an external synthesizer.
