I may be incorrect, I just realized this was for 2010, I am using 2007.

To make shore  that you have a sound played when you get messages Do the
following
1 press ault f for file
2 arrow down until you hear options and press enter
3 arrow down   2 times until you hear mail
4 tab until you hear  reading pane  then tab once And you will hear play a
sound check box should be checked Then its quicker to shift tab to you hear
ok and hit enter And all done
