The string of unintelligible letters and numbers you mention is
on some kind of introductory or main screen. I can usually get
past it simply by hitting control-1 to go inthe inbox. When I
exit Eudora from the inbox, instead of exiting the inbox first,
Eudora puts me right back in the Inbox when I re-enter Eudora,
bypassing that initial screen. All this is with WE 7.2 and
Windows XP Pro.

Subject: Re: strange new behavior with Eudora and Window-eyes
You should be worried. I also use Eudora and haven't found a
substitute I like yet, but I know I am going to have to
eventually.
What you are experiencing is most likely a quirk of using an
application that is no longer supported and updated. The
symptoms may
vary from user to user, but as Windows and Window Eyes continue
to be
updated while Eudora isn't, quirks and errors are going to
develop.
The application worked the way it did for you for years because
Qualcomm updated it regularly and made sure it kept up with
changes
and updates in Windows. Now, it is being left behind week by
week as
Microsoft releases new patches for Windows. My Eudora now starts
up
with an odd screen with an unintelligible string of letters and
numbers and I have to control F4 them about a dozen or so times
until
all these Windows are gone and then have to bring the Inbox back
up
before I can read messages. Just another symptom of the
outdating of
the application on my particular system. I've tried uninstalling
and
cleaning everything out of the registry and reinstalling, but the
behavior always comes back.
You might be able to tinker with things and get your Eudora to
work
as it used to for a time, but these things are going to happen
more
and more, and eventually Eudora isn't going to work at all
anymore
because Windows is evolving and mail standards are evolving while
Eudora is now stagnant and has been for some years now. That
doesn't
mean that all issues are going to be because of this and it
doesn't
mean that those of us who have used Eudora for years, I have been
using it for about 16 years, have to stop immediately, but you
can't
assume that just because it has worked a particular way for all
the
years you have used it that it will still work that way next
week.
Next weeks Windows patch might break something for it that will
never
be fixed and obsolete software like Eudora is also very prone to
corruption which requires not only uninstallation to fix but also
cleaning out of every trace of the application from the registry
before reinstallation.
I'm considering trying out Becky. I found Thunderbird annoying
even
with the addon that is supposed to make it act more like Eudora.
I
keep putting off trying more alternate email clients, but I know
that
if I don't want to have to find a new one in an emergency when
Eudora
is finally completely broken, I need to get looking and all
Eudora
users need to keep this in mind no matter how well the
application is
working for them today.

Chris

I'm not really that worried about who made it. It always worked
this way for years, and now it doesn't. Is there something I
need
to look at with Window-Eyes to make it like it was? I don't
think
anything about Eudora has changed, since all the information is
there if I send a message back to myself, or some one else, such
as
in a reply to a message. Thanks for any advice anyone can give.

Hi Kim,
Eudora is no longer made by qualqum and they never made any
other versions.
You may want to try something like thunderbird or wlm.

Subject: strange new behavior with Eudora and Window-eyes
Hi everyone,
In the last couple of days, I've noticed a different behavior
with
Eudora 7.1 and Window-eyes 7.2. Previously, if I was replying
to a
message, the original message was always at the right of the
cursor,
preceded by "at 10:08 you wrote)"
Now, if I hit control-r to reply, I get something that says
"edit
box". If I type a wrong key, and try to backspace over it, I
can't
read anything I've written. However, if I send it out or back
to
myself, it's there.
Any ideas? I've checked, and the appropriate set file for
Eudora is loaded.
