Internet security is the same. Once you understand the installer it's fine. For example, press space on the avg toolbar option, by default it is checked, pressing spacebar unchecks it.
It is a little strange, but as you say, very doable. Not sure about the free version, but with Internet security you can assign sounds for different events. subsequent scans of your computer are very fast. AVG doesn't seem to slow the system down for those scans as it has done in the past.
