I'm sorry to tell you, but I have done he exact same thing putting updates to never check and the loss of speech is definitely a problem even minus the updates checking. If GW is going to claim to have a rock solid screen reader, they need to fix that issue in windows 7 wich is more than minor and unusual for sure. The issue pretty much equals unreliable.
