Russel, it really sounds like something you've installed. I'd first look at your anti-virus software, and try to disable it (it might be scanning web pages before you can see them, and maybe it's doing something to show you that's happening).
next, it might be an add-on in IE itself. you can go into IE, and choose manage add-ons, and disable all of them one by one, and I'd try that. Next, do you have any software installed whose named starts with Omni?
