Hi Janet, sorry the holidays kept me from answering your email sooner.
Unfortunately, it seems to me there's no easy way to find out your location. This info is in the status bar, and you can read the status bar with control-insert-s; but the info is all run together and hard to understand. if you have the options for WE to tell you all the formatting turned on (such as font type, font size, spacing, etc.), then it reads the status bar mixed with a lot of this formatting info, making it really hard to understand. You can move your mouse cursor down to the bottom of the window, and slowly go across to read the info a bit at a time, and that may be the best way. maybe it's better with 2007, I'm using 2003 mostly. The WE cursor location hotkey is control-numericpad plus sign. This will tell you the spacing in ches, from the top left edge of the paper, where your current cursor is located. This should be a lot more helpful to you than knowing the "line and column number" from the status bar, as they aren't very exact, since you can have a large heading, which maybe takes up 2 "lines", and so it becomes confusing how you count lines. I don't know of a way for you to know the page number though without using the status bar. As for knowing the formatting, this too gets complicated. There's a verbosity option you can turn on which will cause WE to speak "styles" as you pass over them. or, you can use the element format hotkey (insert-E), which will give you all the formatting info for where your cursor is positioned; this is displayed in it's own little editbox, so it doesn't just tell you as you move the cursor over different portions. There's a lot of formatting info it doesn't tell you; formatting which can be applied directly to the paragraph instead of using a style, so I've written a script called "MS Word", which tells you this info as you cursor over each paragraph. it doesn't duplicate what WE already can tell you, it just supplements it with additional info. It does a lot of other things, but I'd recommend it to anyone needing to know all about the Word document formatting. And finally, there's a verbosity option, which you can turn on and it will tell you when attributes change as you cursor over them (these are things like bold or underling). this can be toggled with the windows-A hotkey. And there's a format alert hotkey, which is CTRL-ALT-SHIFT-F, which when on tells you changes having to do with spacing and indenting as you cursor over them. It's good you asked this here on the list, maybe others can chime in and explain it better, or list things I've forgotten, but it gets complicated trying to get all the different types of info a Word document has in order to control how it appears. places like access technology institute, or national braille press, or american printing house, sell books on how to use Word with a screen reader, which do cover a lot of this; they may not be specific to window eyes, but they are probably still quite helpful in just knowing what it is you're dealing with. hth, Chip all this information -----Original Message----- From: janet brandly [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Sunday, December 26, 2010 3:08 PM To: [email protected] Cc: [email protected]; Kimberly Cline Subject: Looking for some WE commands in Word 2007 Hi everyone, I hope you can answer some questions for me regarding Word 2007 and WE 7.2. First, what is the WE command to tell me where my cursor is within a document, i.e., what page, line and column I am on? Second, how do I confirm styles that I have applied to selected text, i.e., whether the text is centered, has a particular heading style, etc.? I need to be able to access this information to format and check the formatting of medical reports I write.
