Thank forhyour comments. I do use two screen readers/ screen access applications, out of necessity. I have my preferences, but I can use both. I would use any application that does what is required.
There are some of us who swear by our system of choice, and that's OK. When improvements are available, and we can take advantage of them, so much the better. Who of us would not like the opportunity of driving a Rolls-Royce. Unfortunately, there is only a Volkswagen in the driveway. -----Original Message----- From: James Aldrich [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Thursday, February 03, 2011 10:21 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Competition, the American Way, some thoughts! Hello! This at a glance may appear off topic but I can assure you that I'm right on here! We all should take the time to be thankful of the choices we now have when it comes to screen access solutions. It isn't just between JFW and Window Eyes any more! We even have a larger choice of speech engines and more are coming on the market. For now, I'll limit my discussion to screen readers or should I say screen access solutions. I am not the only one on this list who uses more than one screen access solution. I know of five or six people who are doing what I do! They may use different solutions but they have more than one screen access solution! I have System Access, Window Eyes and NVDA on both my computers, a netbook on Windows XP and a laptop using Windows seven 64 bit. System Access is my screen access of choice! I'm using it now as I write this! That said, I do use Window Eyes for various websites and often use it with Outlook Express with my XP machine. Even though the NVDA speech engine annoys me, I use it but then that program is free and can be used for some purposes. I think it deals with edit boxes with a beep and a click but haven't filled out forms extensively with it. When shopping or filling out forms, SA is my favorite! I haven't had to deal with forms mode or browse mode for three or more years now! I simply go to the edit box and start typing! That is liberating to say the least! I don't fuss or complain, I just switch my option and all is well! I go back to Window Eyes when I feel I need to do so! Isn't choice wonderrful? As it has been said in the past, it is almost like having a Ford and a Shevi in the same garage except we are speaking about screen access solutions in one's PC. Oh yes! One can buy a Mack! Then too, Dolphin and its other option Guide are attempting to penitrate the North American Market! I'm under the impression that Dolphin is more cumbersome to use than JFW and I thought that one was pretty bad! Anything Freedom Scientific isn't an option for me! I've written themn off! I have no use for them so don't waste your time discussing the virtues of FS. The Dolphin Guide Program is trying to appeal to those who don't wish to be all that computer savvy. I heard Cobra now has a US dealer. I believe it is out of Korea. There are other options which have specific purposes but I won't elaborate on them for now! I'm sticking with Window Eyes and SA since both companies have excellent customer support! I have had remote access with SA for three years or better as well. I'm glad Window Eyes is catching up to this! I think having this remote access should make it possible to trouble shoot problems with some computers. Hopefully, one may not hear the phrase, Send in your PC and we'll check it out! I think this is a win win situation. At least, I hope it turns out to be! I'm very enthusiastic about sA but it wouldn't be proper to sing its praises here! I will say if I don't like the way a word is pronounced, I simply change the speech engine and it may say the word the way I want to hear it! That has worked. Other times, I think some mispronounced words are so funny I don't change them! We have come a long way since the Dos days and changing the pronunciation isn't as big an issue for me today as it was some years ago! I like a solution which is very easy to use, to install or uninstall from any PC, or I can go online or use a U3 smart drive so my solution can go from one PC to another. This can happen with Window Eyes as well. I for one am looking forward to the 7.5 Beta! I will be participating! One cannot dispute how responsive Window Eyes actually is! I use eloquence with Window Eyes! I think it is high time to have a simpler interface than what is the case presently! Many of the folks at Serotek hailed this new upgrade! This too is a good sign for GW Micro when the competition recognizes what is about to take place! I should think all of us could show our enthusiasm and appreciation for the upgrade which is about to take place especially when the competition can see merrit to this upgrade! You don't have to take my word for it! Go to: http://www.serotalk.com and listen to the ATIA presentations. For those of you wanting a change in the Browse mode! You are right but it is your own fault for not utilizing a solution which as solved this problem. It is not the fault of GW Micro, it is your fault for refusing to utilize another option till GW Micro catches up with this Browse Mode problem. In my view, mature people look at their options and put one to use which best needs their needs at the time! SA is my favorite option but NVDA may work well too! I often say the blind have too many whiners among us! We could use less bandwidth and get more done by using any solution which best meets our needs! I too believe GW Micro will catch up with this one and they will be around for some time! If any of you wish to take issue with me, please do the list a favor and write me privately! It is easy to do! I'm looking forward to this new beta! Thanks for reading! Jim Aldrich Skype: jkaldrich101 If you reply to this message it will be delivered to the original sender only.
