By default Total Recorder doesn't work like other audio editors or word
processors do by selecting data in the way you described.

You must first find the point where you want your selection to begin, press the
l" key for left selection.

Now find the place where you wish selection to end, press "R" for right
selection. You will see options in various menus for manipulation of the
selection, I.E. adjusting selection boundaries, playing before and after
selection etc so with a little patience and practise you can create some very
nice editing work and so forth.

You can redefine hot keys in Total Recorder should you need to, by the way
which version of Total Recorder are you using? I don't think that many of the
selection and editing controls are available in the "Standard" edition, only
Professional, Video and Developer editions support them.
