Aloha paula,
If you want your i e 8 to open in full screen mode, the best way to do this is 
to   go to your desktop,
then press i, until you hear internet explorer,
then press the context key, which is the  key left of the right control key,
then press r,
then within the shortcuts tab,
press tab key 4 times and arrow down until you hear maximize window,
then enter to save the settings.
