Yes, the reading pane is turned off. I wonder why this was not talked about

Do you have the reading pane turned off? It must be set to show at the right
to hear the message status. If you have it turned off or showing at the
bottom, then the message list turns into a standard listview and the status
is not spoken. These are my results found running WLM 2011 on Windows 7
64-bit.
