There is no need to script the buttons. Press Alt-N to open, Alt-I to
file, Alt-D to delete, and Alt-R to open the message in its folder. Note
that a message must first be selected before these buttons will be enabled.

When you arrow through search results, your focus does in fact move to
different fields in the dialog. This is a Thunderbird bug that I recall
got fixed but subsequently broken again. The best way I have found to
read through the results is to review the screen with the mouse,
double-click the message I'm interested in reading, and press Enter to
open it. Interestingly enough, once your focus is firmly on a message in
the search results, you can use your arrows to navigate them.
