To address the basics, you will need to use iTunes to update the firmware on the iPhone. This is pretty easy to do, as once you get iTunes installed, whenever you plug your phone into the PC, iTunes should launch, and if there is a firmware update available, a dialogue will pop up asking you if you want to install it.
