Thank you to some folks who wrote to me off list.  I managed to go back to
IE8  which will solve the problem for the moment.  

 

This solution worked for me.  I went to Start, settings, control panel,

Programme and feature, clicked on view installed updates, typed in exp in
the search edit box and managed to uninstall IE9, rebooted the machine and
got back my old friend IE8.  I then went to windows updates and told it to
not show the IE9 update.
