The way to find out if your DecTalk express is dead is to plug it up in to the wall and turn it on, if it beaps, wait fifteen secnods and Dectalk should say, "Dectalk express is running, external power on." If it does do that, go to a computer store or have someone with sighted assistance help you remove the battery. If you don't do this, eventually, the power supply will go and with it, the battery. Dectalk will not be able to work after this. I have the battery sitting in a drawer in my living room as we speak. As I write this, I am using my Dectalk Express with a USB to serial converter cable. I am not sure about the DoubleTalk as it's been a while. If you haven't had the firmware updated, you might want to send it in to R.C systems to have that done.
