I'll reply on list in case others want to know, but I think we should
take this off list for more discussion. I have a kindle and love it.
There is no such thing as a kindle for the blind. They made version 3
somewhat accessible. The list of books talks, the menus speak, and some
books will read with text to speech. Others do not, depends on the
publisher. As for buying books, cost is around $4 on up. A sighted
person can use their kindle to shop on line, but we can not, that part
doesn't talk!!! You have to buy them on your computer, their web page
is a little strange as well, but does work. Once you've bought the
book, when you turn wireless on it is sent to your kindle. The kindle
does have some strange things. If you're reading a book, you can't jump
forward and back a page without turning speech off. If you jump out of
the book and back in, you again have to turn on text to speech. It is
not as convenient as a digital talking book machine, but I can get a lot
of books that nls just doesn't have.
Another way to read is the free kindle for pc software. You still have
to buy the books, but this program is sort of a virtual kindle on your
computer. You have more control over the speech rates, and the next
page and so forth works much better. Both use the same text to speech,
and I think it is quite good.

'm reading that folks use Kindle, to read their books. Tow questions, as my
sighted wife just got a Kindle. What's the advantage of a Kindle over the
digital talking book machine, from the state library? Also where do you get a
Kindle for the blind and what do they cost?
