John,
 
if you can't save it in Word's format and do this, then when you do save it
as a Word document, you'll need to make these preliminary pages into their
own section.  that will let you specify a page numbering scheme different
from that used in the main document.
 
if the scanning ends up leaving the page numbers in the scanned page, and
not converting it into a Word page number, then after doing this you'll need
to go to these preliminary pages and remove the page number from the bottom
of the body of the page, or it will end up being there twice on each page.
