I just got a brainstorm as to what this guy might want try.
Get a USB wireless card; but rather than plugging it into the laptop 
directly, use a active usb cable which is plugged into a usb port on the 
laptop and connect the wireless card into the end of the active cable.
just for clarification, an active cable differs from a standard usb cable 
is that no signal strength is lost, and up to 5 of these 16 ft cables can 
be connected together for up to 80 ft.
I have used this kind of set-ups with pcs with wireless keyboards with 
great success.

Applying it to the current situation, with the wireless card at the end of 
the active cable, he could try positioning his card for the best reception 
and move it around as needed even on a moment's notice without 
inconveniencing himself as to where he might have to sit.
