I don't know of anything that automates this as completely as you might want,
but there are some tools that might help. Microsoft Synctoy is pretty
accessible and will allow you to define pairs of folders across drives and then
manually update them. Just learn what their terms for different kinds of
syncing arrangements are so you're not surprised (possibly unhappily) by the
results. Others on this list have used Handy Backup and seem to like it, but
I've found it takes just a little more time to set up than Synctoy. Synctoy has
a "contribute" feature which allows you to readily update one folder from
another without syncing, which is useful.

Neither are especially good at handling errors. For example, if files on one
drive have especially long file names or are in use at the time of the
transfer, they won't be copied or moved. As far as I can tell, both programs
ignore the files; however, if they've skipped a file, they do log it, but it's
a huge pain to go back and find the file and fix whatever problem there is so
it will transfer.

There are some copy utilities that will more or less automatically fix errors
or will be more aggressive about copying a file even when there's an error, but
I have not yet found one that's especially accessible. TeraCopy is one of these
utilities. The interface isn't accessible enough to give me enough control over
the process for me to recommend it. I wrote the list with a question about
these utilities, but didn't see a response.

Finally, there are several command line utilities that give you a great deal of
control over how you copy and synchronize. If that's what you want, I expect
several on this list would have recommendations.

Subject: Best on line file transfer and synch software with windows eyes 7.5

[cid:A45774C80B2B4EBA809CD6CF5E6A8101@Mydesktop]

Dear listers,

I hope someone on the list has experience with some service or program that
will allow me to do the following:

I have three different computers on a home network. One is a laptop running
windows 7 ultimate. The computer that my dsl/router is hooked up to is a
desktop running Windows Media edition(which I guess is similar to windows xp.
And the last is another desktop that is running windows 7 home premium. I have
files and e-mail and browser settings that I would like to transfer to the
other two computers. So the files would be coming from a windows xp me media
edition and going to windows 7 systems only one is an ultimate version and the
other a home premium version. Is there an on line service or a program that
will allow me to not only transfer my data files from the older windows system
to the newer systems, and also keep them subsequently synchronized so that I
need only make changes in a file in one of my systems and not have to worry
about updating copies of the file on the other two. I realize that I will not
be able to transfer settings from one computer to another if both computers do
not have the same program that accesses the file on both systems. Anyway, I
hope I explained my situation clearly enough, but if not please fell free to
contact me off list at:
[email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>.

Regards,
