Yes, I'm afraid the Window-Eyes exception dictionary is not very versatile.
I have more flexibility with the Talks screen reader exception dictionary on
my cell phone.
I recall that, once upon a time long, long ago, one screen reader allowed
the user to put wild cards in the exception dictionary so that one entry
could fix more than one form of a word.
I recall also that GW Micro said that someone could write an exception
dictionary app, but it must not be that simple since no one has done it.

I agree. It would be great to have more flexibility in the dictionary. I
just don't get, why did they ever remove the feature, if it already
existed? After all, the dictionary feature of WE - as it stands today - is
that (sorry for the expression) old-fashioned, that I more or less have
stopped using it. There is way too many limitations, meaning that the
things you really want to modify in the speech, you are not allowed to - or
at least I never seen a good workaround. Spaces, special characters,
punctuations - the list goes on. Maybe that was the reality when I was a
child, that computers could not handle that kind of stuff in an exception
dictionary. But that is several decades ago. The screen reader I was using
under DOS, in the mid-80s, did have a better pronounciation dictionary
capabilities, than what is the case with WE7.5 - close to thirty years
later. OK, GW tells us to sing the old song - you can just script it. Good
enough, if anyone wants to build such an app, that would let us use a
greatly increased dictionary feature; I am one of the users that would have
embraced such a thing. Even other software - that is not build to serve you
as much as a screen reader - do hold far more advanced capabilities on that
front. What about the chance of adding on phonems, to your pronounciation?
That was one of the things my old DOS-based screen reader could do - Under
Windows, I can have TextAloud do it - but can I get WinEyes to do that
stuff? If anyone knows how, let me please know.
Well, as I said, if anyone who has the skills, could have build that
script that GW did encourage us to write at an earlier state, when
dictionary questions came up; I would greatly have appriciated that.
Unfortunately, I don't have the skills, nor the time to do it. And, I
never was aware, that GW would have reduced the functionality of the
feature; like it seems from your quotations. Kind of puzzled, why they did
such a reduction. Guess, they had a reason for doing it; but wonder if
that reason still is applicable. Technology do evolve, don't it? Smile.

I quote a small part of the window-eyes changes of 4.1 to 4.11. This is
from the general enhancements section.
We solved problems reading by character with the mouse in the properties
dialog in
Windows Explorer for a file. This was introduced in 4.1.
We fixed a problem that prevented you from doing a bottom right and then
prior character
with the mouse.
We now treat Via Voice Outloud 5.0 like Eloquence 5.0.
We now disable the abbreviation dictionary with Eloquence.
We no longer allow you to type spaces in the original field in the
exception dictionary
dialog
We found cases where windows were being created as checkboxes and then
switched to
radio buttons. Window-Eyes will now account for this. Note that this
could in theory
happen with buttons, checkboxes, radio buttons, and group boxes and we
take all cases
in to consideration.
We removed the exclude from lines Braille option from the edit graphic
label dialog
Notice the sentnece
We no longer allow you to type spaces in the original field in the
exception dictionary

Since this was taken out, why can't it be put back in to window-eyes. I
would appreciate assistance in this matter because I would very much like
to find this ability in window-eyes.
