I think that Microsoft Security Essentials, Windows Fire Wall, along with Windows Defender is a good combination. They work well without using up a lot of resources like Norton or AVG as examples.
If something gets by them, then using another tool to remove the problem works nicely. For example, I will run Malware Bytes from time to time to remove anything that got past the fore mentioned. Keeps things nice and tidy in my situation. Heck even running Spybot from time to time also works nicely. Then the Microsoft products have a chance to get caught up and all is good for some time.
