Craig, In the case of my HP, I have looked at the manual and there truly does not seem to be an imbedded numeric pad. In addition, it came with the function keys defaulting to laptop processes like turning wireless on and off. One had to use the FN key with the function keys to get F1 through F12. One had to change this behavior by going into the BIOS settings, something we can't do independently, but at least it can be changed so far. . Finally, after changing the default to get normal behavior from the function keys, The INSERT key is only available with the FN key. These are all manageable, but all of this was unexpected when I bought this computer. This all points to making use of the laptop setting because some of this appears to be changing after years of remaining pretty constant. My understanding is that having the function keys perform laptop tasks is something done on many of the Apple computers and this is a response to that. Given all of this, I think Kevin's advice to get used to the laptop layout is good advice, and it really does a pretty good job.
