Hi, Pat.
Microsoft Lync is not a replacement for other IM programs. It is a
dedicated communications platform from Microsoft. Their about page states:
What is Lync
Microsoft® Lync® is an enterprise-ready unified communications platform.
With Lync, users can keep track of their contacts' availability; send an
IM; start or join an audio, video, or web conference; or make a phone
call---all through a consistent, familiar interface. Lync is built to
fully integrate with Microsoft Office. The Microsoft Lync 2010 desktop
client is available for Windows
<http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/lync/> and for Mac
<http://www.microsoft.com/mac/enterprise/lync> and mobile versions
<http://lync.microsoft.com/en-us/what-is-lync/Pages/what-is-lync.aspx?Title=mobile-apps&tabID=4&itemID=4>
are available for Windows Phone, iPhone/iPad, and Android devices.
There's not much point in installing the app if you're not in an
business environment that uses Lync.

Aaron,
Does Microsoft's Lync replace the Instant Messenger?
I got the App, but I better get their program, I just wasn't sure if
it replaced Windows Live Messenger.
Thanks.
