with xp you would have to swap out the internal drive to restore the c drive though. with windows 7 you can boot from a external u s b drive. i have a full size tower case and use 2 adonics mobil racks. in 2 spare 5.25 inch drive bays. you can clone your c drive to the second drive and swap drives and boot directly from the backup drive in windows with speech for both a backup or a restore. because in both cases you boot to windows to do it. for a external boot you need to set the computer bios to boot from a u s b device first i have mine set to boot from dvd, a u s b device then the c drive. if you have to re install windows you could do it because it is looking for the dvd drive first. if not it will look for the u s b hard drive and boot from the backup drive. if no drive then it would boot from the c drive. so you would only have to change the settings in bios one time.
