Yes, there are several ways to read Word tables.
One way is to use the "table mode" hotkeys, which is almost identical to the
table mode available in a web browser (except that in Word, you don't
actually have to put We into "table mode", you can just use the table mode
hotkeys when you are in a table). The same set of commands move you around
from cell to cell. In Word's table mode however, WE does not read column or
row headers as it does in the browser table mode. I have written an app
named "Word Advanced Features" which does add the automatic reading of table
column or row headers.
Your other option is not to use the special WE table navigation hotkeys, but
just move around the Word table with standard Word keyboard commands. They
will take you from cell to cell, and when you end up in a cell WE will read
the line you are on (I can't remember, but I don't think it reads the entire
cell). My app again will read row and column headers.
Word doesn't offer as many commands for moving around a table via the
keyboard as the WE table mode does; in Word mostly you can use the tab key
to move to the next cell; and if you use the arrow keys, when you come to
the edge of a cell, one more press of the arrow key will move you into the
next cell. If you have this switched on, WE will announce the row and
column position when you enter a new cell (which is what you noticed at
first when you started this thread).
Also, WE comes with an app automatically installed (or you can go get it if
you don't have it); its name is WordNav, and it helps you navigate around a
Word document, including helping you to find a table, and skip past it.
GW offers an e-book for sale on using Word with WE; I'd recommend buying it
or the one from Access Technology if you are going to be doing anything much
at all in Word; it's just too complex to pick up on your own.

So is there a way to read the tables with WE? I've heard discussion
of this on the List in the past but am not familiar with reading tables.

This is probably because the Word file contains a table: R1 C1
means row one, column one.

I see this from time to time on Word files.
Most every line reads something such as R2C1. The numbers go up as i
go down the page.
If I read the line the numbers and letters are not there.
A sighted person does not see them.
But when I use a down arrow, they read.
They seem to be on every line and the numbers get larger and larger
as i arrow down the page.
