So, I've played around a bit more with the free version of Rootsmagic. I
can use the mouse just fine if I start from the top of the screen, but
it isn't accurate if I start from the bottom of the screen. Not exactly
sure why that is.
I can get the menus to work with the mouse, but not with the alt and
arrow keys. They do seem to offer shortcut keys for many operations, but
there doesn't appear to be a complete list in the documentation. The
documentation said something about being able to dock the menu, but I
wasn't able to figure out how to get that done. I'm wondering if that
would help. Any thoughts?
Some of the custom controls appeared to be list views, or something
similar, but when I tried reclassing them, they did not read as list
views or list boxes, so I changed them back to the original class. When
editing people, facts, sources, etc, most are standard edit boxes, and
buttons. The custom controls appear on the main screen and for the list
of facts about a person, and the list of different types of sources, and
maybe some other places I haven't discovered. Those that are lists
appear to work with the arrow keys. None of the custom controls are
labeled. Is there a way to label the custom controls, so I know what it
does?
Thanks for all your help. I think I may get this program working for me.
It will just take a little work.

Hi Melissa,
If this software tries to draw graphical trees of your family for you, it's
unlikely an app will be able to do anything. The only time an app might be
able to deal with such a graphical program would be if they offered a COM
automation interface to their program, so that another program could
interface with Roots Magic and determine what information it had, and was
displaying on the screen. You could take this email and forward it on to
their sales team, and ask them if this is something Roots Magic offers.

Subject: RootsMagic--would an app help?
I'm working on my genealogy, and am very interested in using
Rootsmagic 5. They have a free and paid version, so I
downloaded the free version.
Once I get in to the program, I just hear custom control, and
when pressing the alt key to bring up the menu nothing
appears to happen. I can sort of use the mouse to look around
the window, but it appears to have some focus issues. Would
anyone be interested in downloading the free version, and
seeing if an app could fix the issues? the web site is
http://www.rootsmagic.com/ . This is supposed to be the best
family tree software available. I've tried a couple of
others, and they work to a certain extent, but they don't
have some of the features that Rootsmagic does. This message
should probably go to the apps list, but I'm not currently a
member of that list.
Thanks for any help.
