Also, many laptops still have an imbedded numeric pad that is activated by 
holding down the FN key.  On four laptops I've used 
over the years, this approach has worked well enough for me that I have not had 
to use the laptop layout.  Having said that, my 
latest laptop appears not to have this option and I have switched to the laptop 
layout there, and it has worked well.
