If you have never used a POP 3/IMAP client with your GMail account before, you have to enable it in the options on the GMail site. Log into your GMail account and hit the link that says Settings. Do some searching and you should find it. GMail also has some good documentation explaining how to set this up.

Hello list,

I’ve downloaded Thunderbird to use on my gmail account while I’m using
Outlook for a second account. I’ve installed Thunderbird and I’m able to
send an email in Thunderbird. However, how do I retrieve my gmail
messages via Thunderbird? At the moment it says that I don’t have any
messages on my gmail account. But if I go to my gmail account on the
internet, there are quite a few messages.
