Seems like the good compromise would be to add one more choice to this
verbosity box--read location only.

Tom and others,

When you say you don't know you are on an edit box, is this because you have
set your verbosity such that we don't read the first 24 lines or do a read
to end on the page?  Because if you do have the default of 24 lines, you
hear edit box as the first line indicating you are on the edit box.  But if
you have it setup to not read anything...well, you don't hear anything.
