Hi Jim,

I think you're right, but wanted to mention a couple of points:

First, I think it's Word which is so slow, not the screen reader. I work
with many sighted users as they do things in Word, and they make very
similar comments about their experiences with Word.

Next, there are better ways to move around a Word document other than just
holding down an arrow key and waiting until you get there.

Third, part of the issue is that we all want WE to be able to tell us
anything and everything about a Word document as we move around: we want to
know about colors, and spacing, and shading, and font size changes, and
footnotes, etc. And because of our need to know all this, WE has to check
for *all* of this, on each and every key movement, so that it can tell us.
That's why I mentioned there are better ways to move around; holding down an
arrow key forces WE to make all these checks hundreds if not thousands of
times. If you just search, or use keys to move by paragraph or page, you
can greatly reduce the amount of work WE has to do.

I don't mean you shouldn't let GW know of your difficulties, just have some
understanding if things can't work as you would like; in part it's because
they are trying to meet the needs of everyone.

Chip
