I have no idea why you're seeing these lockups, but I'm getting the same kind of thing on a laptop. Never had a problem with 7/541 and currently don't have a problem with Shark14. But the beta 2 often makes me feel like I'm sending commands to the Martian lander and waiting my obligatory eight seconds for a response.
I've turned off any special effects in my sound card, and it's my belief that I'm running the latest Realtek drivers. Killing apps didn't help; killing some of the Toshiba nonessential junk has helped a little, but it wasn't necessary to do that under 7.541. The delays are frequent and seem to blanket every program I use. The Work PC runs the beta perfectly without these inexplicable delays. So it's clearly something in the laptop, and it's some component of the beta, since NVDA and Shark14 work ok with it.
