I don't know if this will work, but something to check. Press Windows+b to focus the notification area. Arrow up to the button about the volume. Press shift+f10 to bring up the context menu. Arrow down to open volume mixer and press enter. Once in the volume mixer, tab around. You should find a volume setting for Thunderbird, assuming it is open. Perhaps, the Thunderbird volume is too low for you to hear the sound.

Hello I would like to have thunder bird play the new mail sound when I
get new mail. I do have everything set in the options menu and
checked everything for an alert to show. I do have the play a sound when
new mail arrives that box is checked and the radio button is checked to
play default sound. I even went in to the actual sound properties in
windows7 and made sure the new mail notification does have a sound and
it does. So why can't I get this to work in thunder bird? How can this
be fixed? Please help me out. Thank you.
