You are correct, Dave, in that you can turn off the announcement of
landmarks by modifying the "Speak number of landmarks" setting under New
Page Information 2 in the Browse Mode verbosity settings.
As to your question, the W3C ARIA Best Practices spec says that
landmarks, "are a vast improvement over the rudimentary "skip to main
content" technique employed prior to WAI-ARIA." They go on to say, "The
presence of common, semantic, navigation landmarks allows each site to
support the same standard and allows your assistive technology to
provide a consistent navigation experience - an important feature for
screen readers and alternate input solutions. For users with cognitive
and learning disabilities the landmark information could be used to
expand and collapse these regions of your page to aid in simplifying the
user experience by allowing the user to manage the amount of information
processed at any one time."
Think of landmarks on the web just like landmarks in real life: "An
object or feature of a landscape or town that enables someone to
establish their location."

can you just have the landmarks turned off? also, would someone mind
defining what landmarks do? I don't understand the concept at all.

Aloha,
I am also having the same problem.
In the current firefox, windows 7, and the new we8, when I am on my
yahoo inbox, if I go down the from: column in table mode, I hear main
content then the sender of the email.
This did not happen with we7.5.
Perhaps the page has been redesigned.
While writing this email, I went to my yahoo inbox to check if the
same thing happens if not in table mode, and main content is on the
web page.
However, when I came back to writing this email, all I got was bing
sound when using the arrow to find out where I was in the email. I
refreshed the page, which did not help.
I had to cut and paste to notepad to finish this email.
Many thanks,
Manny
