Retrieves its info from WeatherUnderground. This is the website, that most
weather products I have seen for the computer, will be using.

How often does it get updated? That, you see, will greatly depend. The webpage
has literally thousands of observation points registered. It does retrieve info
from sources all over the world. SmSome of these, might be automated, others
might be manually updated. All depending on which points you exactly are
looking at, the update rate, may vary from a few times a day, to several times
an hour.

Many of the observation points for weather sites like this, are located in
connection with a local airport. Hence, even if it gives you the conditions for
your own town or city, and you happen to live on the opposite side of town from
the airport - you likely will find that the conditions might slightly differ
from what is the actual case in your location. Even just a couple of miles in
air-line, might cause rather big differences in wind, cloud and temperature
conditions. Airports, tend to be located at the outskirts of the city, or even
in a suburb. They are often located in open and windy spots; something that is
of high importance for take-off and landing operations. As such, the
observations could likely give you wind conditions, that would be somehow
stronger, than what you experience downtown, in the middle of high buildings.
Also, the temperature might be a degree or two lower at the observation point,
than what you are experiencing in built-up areas. It is quite shocking news, to
learn how much heat, a building is "sweating" off to its surroundings. They made
some investigations locally, a couple of years ago, and found that the
difference in temperature in highly densed, populated parts of the city, can be
several degrees higher, than the ones measured other places. Well, all of this,
just to tell you why, you will find that it not always seem to be inline with
what you find outside your own front-door. Even if the site is updated several
times an hour, for your local observation point, the conditions might be quite
stabil in that very place. Do you live a few miles away, maybe close to
forrest, mountains or lakes, you will find that the weather could change in
your backyard, a few times within that same period. So, when you experience the
weather outside your door changing, and you check the WeatherUnderground site,
and find it has not changed - you might jump to the conclusion, this is not a
reliable source. Yet, the above, should give you but a few reasons why this
might be the case, and still could be said to be reliable as technology allows.

It's been awhile since I did visit the WeatherUnderground site natively, but it
does hold a long line of info for most observation points, that might not be
spoken to you. Up till now, I haven't seen any retrieving software or apps,
that let's you choose to have all the info on each location fully spoken. For
instance, you will find info about the sun-rise and -set, the moon phase, 1-day
and 7-day forecasts, and so forth. My memory would not be too reliable, if it
even gives you the actual time for the last update on that location. If it
does, this could of course, have been added on as a choice in the WeatherOrNot
app, to have spoken to you, when was the conditions last updated.

A couple of years ago, I dropped another message on this list, going into
several details on the weather service. Search the archives for the message, or
drop me a message off-list, and I could see if I can get hold of the message.
There, I did tell a few things more, as to why conditions might not always
reflect your local experience.

  Subject: Weather Or Not.

  Listers,

I am a new convert to Window Eyes and am glad I've made the decision to use
it.

I'm using the Weather Or Not app and, having used other weather programmes in
the past I'm interested to know what system the app uses to gather the weather
information and, how often it is updated.

  Steve
