The way I hide a update is by simply routing the mouse to the update and
doing a right click on it. You then have a list of options one of which
is hide the update.

You didn't specify what version of Windows you're running. So here's
what I do on Windows 7.
1. Hit the start button and enter Windows Update. It should be selected
because you typed it all in. So just hit enter to go into the control
panel, Windows update.
2. Shift-Tab up to change settings.
I set it to check for updates but not to download or install them
automatically.
3. Be it that most updates are put out on the first Tuesday of the month
and that I use Microsoft Security Essentials I check for updates every
few days.
4. When I check and activate the link for optional updates they're all
unchecked by default. When I see something like the Bing Desktop I just
focus it and hit the Application key to open the context menu. You'll
find the Hide update option in that menu.

Hi. I need to hide an update which is the bing desktop, smile. Tom
Kingston put it mildly. The update is indeed a headache for screen
reader
users. Here's why I feel the need to hide the update as opposed to
physically damaging one of my computers in frustration, grin.
I use Outlook 2010 and like to keep the inbox open waiting for e-mail
messages. From time to time, bing desktop would be triggered. A
message is
spoken which says static box with the bing desktop requesting a search
term.
I then have to alt-tab back to the inbox. I find this extremely
annoying.
Also after the computers boot up, the bing desktop would get in the
way so I
would have to alt-tab to focus the start menu and other items. Again,
this
is extremely annoying. I have uninstalled the update from my laptop.
I had
to have sighted assistance to remove the update from my new desktop
because
I couldn't get the update to uninstall. Tom Kingston mentioned hiding
the
update but didn't explain how to do it, grin. Ok, I don't hide
updates all
that much, in fact, not ever, grin. Thanks.
