Pat, you can use the MS Word's find feature to search for two or three spaces just as you can search for any other characters you type from the keyboard. For example, press control plus F to bring up the MS Word find dialog box. Then while in the search field, just press the space bar two or three times, depending on how many spaces you want to search for, then press enter to start your search. This way you won't have to read through your whole document, line by line, to find the extra spaces. That's how I did it a few years ago when I had a 190 page manuscript to prepare, and it worked well.
