Okay, after restarting the computer this morning, I was able to navigate to and read the main text (i.e. NOT just the links). I was also able to use control-shift-a to go in and out of browse mode. However, five hours later (I switch between programs many times a day), I was no longer able to turn browse mode on and off and I could not read the main text of web pages.
