If you're satisfied with Thunderbird don't worry; it's not going anywhere. Mozilla will continue development until the second half of this year. After that they will still manage it for stability and security. They just won't be adding any new features. That will be opened up in some sort of open source project. But again, that will only be for new features. As I said, Mozilla will still manage stability and security issues as well as releases.
At least that's the last news I read on it.

Andrea,
You can import thunderbird folders into WLM with the help of a TB plugin.
Here you can find a small explanation:
http://www.vistaheads.com/forums/microsoft-public-windows-vista-mail/233008-
importing-email-thunderbird-windows-mail.html
The important text is:
Get the ImportExport message extension for Thunderbird
http://nic-nac-project.de/~kaosmos/mboximport-en.html
Tbird:
highlight a folder
Tools - Import/Export in mbox/eml format - Export all messages in the
folder - EML format
pick a location to save the files
OK
the files will be saved in a subfolder
(do this for all the folders)
WM/WLM:
File - Import - Messages - Windows Live Mail
select the folder location you saved the files to
next
All folders
next
Finish
The messages are located in Imported Folder

Subject: Email Client

I understand that Mozilla is to discontinue development of Thunderbird.
I have tried other programs (WLM and Outlook2007) as replacements.
However neither of this programs appears to have the ability to import
my messages from Thunderbird (latest version).
Need a program which is WE friendly. Need a program which might import
emails from various other email clients. Doesn't necessarily have to be
freeware.
Any suggestions?
Cheers
Andrea
