Thanks. A sighted computer whiz friend uninstalled 11 and installed 10, then
unprotected the Internet Explorer. It works.

I think I may have found the cause. It's something to do with the program
being in protected mode or some such by default. I did follow the instructions
given in the popup dialogue box but still couldn't find the relevant checkbox
or radio button in the preferences.
I have now gone back to version 10 of the adobe reader which you can download
from
  http://get.adobe.com/uk/reader/otherversions/
There is a small form to complete prior to download. There are three combo
boxes
operating system, language and adobe reader version
and a checkbox to tick if you wish to also install google crome
When you run the program for the first time, you're asked to keep or disable
protected mode. I chose run with protected mode disabled.

Good luck and if you need any more help drop me a line.
  Sincerely,
  Matt

I'm also finding that Adobe isn't reading for me. I'm using W. E. 8.1 and
Xp. If the latest adobe doesn't work, is there a site where I can get the
older edition? And can I download and install over this one?
